Cork is the name given to the bark of the Cork Oak Tree, a member of the Beech family, characteristic to western Mediterranean countries, primarily Spain and Portugal.
The bark serves as a protective barrier during the average 500 year lifespan of the tree, defending against harsh climate changes and numerous fires inherent to the region. It is also resistant to more than 38 species of insects, including the termite, and to the development of microbes.
Cork trees are stripped of their bark every 9 to 14 years, never cut, ensuring that its habitat remains undisturbed.
The natural structure and chemical composition of Cork contribute to its beneficial properties: insulation, resiliency, impermeability, durability and hypoallergenic and fire retardant tendencies.
Insulation : 90% of cork tissue is gaseous; hence its density is extremely low, supporting great insulation ? thermal and acoustic.
Resiliency : When cork is subjected to pressure, the gas in the cells is compressed and volume reduces considerably. When released from pressure, cork recovers very rapidly to its original shape.
Impermeability : The presence of Suberin, an intrinsic waxy substance, renders cork impervious to both liquid and gas. As a result, it will not rot and is considered the best seal available. This is why wine bottles have been sealed with cork for decades!
Hypoallergenic Tendency : Cork does not absorb dust, and consequently does not cause or contribute to allergies.
Durability : Cork is remarkably resilient. It is less affected by impact and friction than any other hard surface because of its cellular composition. This product has been used in museums, banks, and many other distinguished buildings. In fact, one of the earliest installations was the First Congregational Church of Chicago in 1890! You will also find Natural Cork in the Library of Congress, the Steffen Thomas Museum near Atlanta, Georgia to name a few.
Fire Retardant Property : Cork is a natural fire retardant. It does not release toxic gases during combustion thus flames will not spread.
Installation : The floating floor planks are highly recommended for "do-it yourself" installation. Utilizing a glue-less, "Click" system, you simply lay the planks and use the special "tapping block" to lock them together.
Care : Maintenance is nominal, consisting of an occasional sweep through, vacuuming or damp mopping. Our Cork is pre-stained with 5 layers of protective top coating relieving you of any major upkeep.
Value : The investment for cork flooring is equal to or less than most wood floors. Installation costs are typically less.
